The Statue Walk
Before the wrought iron gates of the Statue Walk are two beds of roses "Elina" - beyond on the left is a find Cornus kousa while on the right is the pretty south elevation of the Old Laundry.
To the left are the Statue Walk's main features - the clipped yews and four stone statues of the Socrates Lycurgus, Epaminondas and Homer. The statues re by Peter Scheemakers (1691-1781), probably the most distinguised sculptor working in this country during the early 18th century. They were originally made for the Temple of Ancient Virtue at Stowe.
At the far end of the Walk are two late 19th century "terms", the first modelled as a bacchante and the second as a satyr. There were formerly in the Leverhulme Collection at Thornton Manor.
On either side of the Eagle Gate are herbaceous borders, with large Wisterias and Roses.
