Gardener's Blog - May 2010 posted

Gardener's Blog - May 2010 posted on 12th May 2010. "Ne'er cast a clout till May be out" is an English proverb that I, and I suspect many others, should pay closer attention to. Last night produced another frost, and had it not been for the protection of the garden walls and mature planting, the bedding plants would now be black and wrinkled. Anything exposed, left to fend for themselves would have perished.I'm not sure if the May to which the proverb alludes to is referring to the the hawthorn, or indeed the month. If it is the May blossom, we will be waiting ages, and I am clearly not patient enough. That said, May is the most exciting month in gardening, not least for the RHS flower shows and the anticipation of billowing summer borders. It is also the penultimate month to the Cottesbrooke Hall Plant Finders Fair, held in association with Gardens Illustrated, and for the first time this year, The Daily Telegraph. By June the summer staples should be performing, but for now there are buds bursting left right and centre. A brief list that are currently looking great are;Tulip Ballerina - Philosophers Garden, planted beneath Rosa Penelope, Allium Purple Sensation and edged with Alchimilla Mollis.Malus Hupensis - West Wild Garden, under planted with Stipa Arundinacea Syn Anemanthele Lessoniana.Aisia Aurea - inter-planted in the terrace borders with Geranium Ann Folkard, dark cornflowers and Iris Jane Phillips. The terrace borders are bristling with purple alliums, and the grass in front of the Wendy House in the Wild Garden is a blanket of Cammassia buds. There is a sprinkling of Blue Bells which run through both sides of the Wild Garden - something we need to extend. The trees are slowly casting their shade, but the Dicentras, Comfrey, Euphorbias and Soloman's Seal are still in full throttle. The newly planted Statue Walk is beginning to settle, and the Cercis trees are pushing out their bright pink flowers from their naked stems. The Wisteria, which flanks the entrace into the pool garden is still tight in bud, but surely it can only be a matter of time....

Gardener's Blog - April 2010 posted

Gardener's Blog - April 2010 posted on 3rd Apr 2010. Phylip Statner, Head Gardener A glorious morning here, but I am saddened to inspect on my walk around the garden so much damage to the Fritillaria bulbs that were planted six weeks ago. The pheasants are to blame.

On the up side, most of the large herbaceous clumps like the Gunnera, Thalictrums and Filipendula are at last emerging from the not so cold ground. The Primroses in the Wild Garden are coming to their peak, and the Camassias, which we planted in the Wendy House meadow have burst through healthily, and full of promise.

We have the new planting design of Arne Maynard's down the Statue Walk to nurture over the coming months. Still in its infancy, I'll be looking forward to lots of green froth, and for the Judas trees to break leaf.

The front of the Hall - to the North - has also been re-designed, and the finishing touches are being done as I write. The large Yew and Beech topiary look terrific, and like the Statue Walk, I look forward to the Beech platforms in front of the house to leaf up.

It is a case of keeping our head above water at the moment, everything moves so quickly, but it is without doubt the best season of the year - in my opinion. The last few preparations this week, include undressing the Peter Scheemakers statues ready for the NGS day this Sunday, the 18th April, 2010. We are delighted to open earlier than usual and the garden has not been open at this time for over ten years.

We hope that you will enjoy the gardens as much as we do.

Phylip Statner 'Should I weed the lawn or say it's a garden'
Anon.

Gardener's Blog - February 2010 posted

Gardener's Blog - February 2010 posted on 19th Feb 2010. Phylip Statner, Head Gardener I saw two kingfishers in the wild garden yesterday. A welcome sight given the winter is long overdue in loosening its grip. Given there isn't a lot to see at the moment, the sight of these marvellous little birds certainly banishes the winter blues for a while.

It's sleeting and cold again today. Thankfully the light levels are noticeably more intense, and we're only month or so from the spring equinox. Our snowdrops have been reluctantly emerging for the last month, and are yet to peak. I suspect, wishing not to tempt fate, that if we're lucky enough to get a half decent March, we'll have all sorts of late winter and early spring bulbs flowering together. The prolonged cold has effectively condensed the transition from winter into spring.
Most of the herbaceous material is now cut down, and we'll hold off the majority of mulching until there's a glimmer of warmth in the soil. Until most of the spring flowers burst forth, the garden is distilled to its purist form, every nook and cranny exposed for inspection. A walk round with a notebook and camera detailing all the improvements to the winter garden is an important job at the moment.

Planting this week has included paeonias and veronicastrums scattered through grass. We've added devils bit scabious - Succisa pratensis to the wild garden, with additions of snakes head fritillary and ragged robins at a later date. With the exception of the hardy annuals sown last September, most plants including herbaceous material is tight in the ground, and we depend highly on the gardens bone structure to provide interest.

Plans continue a pace for this years Fair, with some exciting developments to announce in the near future. All developments and information on the exhibitors can be seen on our website.

Phylip Statner 'Should I weed the lawn or say it's a garden'
Anon.
